about Tagin

The designs are inspired by the millenia-long tradition of Jewish scribal writing and illustrations. The injunction to beautify the Sabbath Day has resulted in intricately worked silver Torah crowns and breastplates, embroidered Torah mantles and Ark curtains. One cannot but be awed by the beautiful calligraphy of Sofrei STaM, those Jewish religious scribes who spend a year or more meticulously writing each Sefer Torah, letter by letter, by hand using a quill and handmade ink.

Elsewhere paintings in oil and other media, sculpture, silverware, jewellery, embroidery and stitchcraft, calligraphy and synagogue decoration attest to the strong artistic force within Jewish craftsmen and craftswomen. That artistic force is reflected in the Jews who commission beautiful works of art.

All the designs which are displayed on this web-site are hand-drawn using pencils, pens, brushes and Indian ink. The images are drawn freehand and various drafting instruments may be used to ensure that lines are straight and that perspectives are correctly rendered. The designs are first drawn in pencil. Then they are inked, usually done under magnification between 2x and 8x.
